Everyone who rides Hà Giang comes back saying the same thing: no photograph does it justice. The Đồng Văn karst plateau stands almost vertical, the Mã Pí Lèng pass is cut into a cliff face, and the Nho Quế river runs turquoise at the bottom of the Tu Sản canyon, nearly 800 m below. That same terrain is why picking the wrong kind of trip ruins the week. Flying in from Hồ Chí Minh City or central Vietnam? Add a night in Hà Nội first — the road from Hà Nội to Hà Giang alone takes six to seven hours.
Car tours — right for most travellers
Someone else drives, you watch. This is the sensible choice with parents, with children, or if you have never ridden mountain switchbacks.

If you take only one: the three-day version with the Nho Quế cruise earns its price. Seeing the Tu Sản canyon from the pass and from the water are two completely different experiences.
Motorbike tours — only if you know what you are doing
Hà Giang is at its best on two wheels, no argument. But this loop has hairpin bends, unguarded drops and fog that arrives without warning. Choose it only if you have ridden long mountain roads before, or hire an "easy rider" to drive while you ride pillion.

Three non-negotiables on a bike: a full-face helmet, a two-piece rain suit rather than a poncho, and no riding after dark — these passes have no lighting and fog drops fast.
Camping and the western loop — for a second visit

Pairing Hà Giang with Sa Pa
Both sit in the northern mountains but look nothing alike: Hà Giang is vertical rock, Sa Pa is soft terraces. A sensible seven- or eight-day plan runs Hà Nội → Hà Giang (3–4 days) → Lào Cai → Sa Pa (2–3 days) → Hà Nội. What to prepare
- Documents. Lũng Cú and several communes sit inside the border zone. Vietnamese travellers need national ID; foreign visitors need a separate border permit, which our operations team arranges when you book.
- Clothing. The gap between Hà Giang town and the top of Mã Pí Lèng can reach 8–10°C. Bring a jacket even in summer.
- Motion sickness. This loop is one bend after another. If you are prone to it, sit in front and take medication 30 minutes before departure.
- Booking window. For buckwheat season (October to December) and public holidays, book three to four weeks ahead — guesthouses in Đồng Văn sell out early.
