If taking the pass, the car turns uphill right before the tunnel entrance and descends again at Lăng Cô; the pass summit has Hải Vân Quan and a viewpoint overlooking Đà Nẵng bay. On rainy days or in thick fog, the operator may switch to the tunnel for safety reasons.

Should you take the tunnel or the pass?
If the only goal is to reach Huế quickly — connecting flights, making check-in time — take the tunnel with a shared car. If you have half a day and it's your first time visiting the Central region, taking the pass by private car is worth every minute: the summit overlooks both Đà Nẵng bay on one side and Lăng Cô bay on the other, and you can stop for seafood in Lăng Cô before heading into Huế.
Tips for this route
The weather at both ends of the pass can be completely different: sunny Đà Nẵng and rainy Huế is common, especially from September to December — keep a light raincoat in your bag. If taking the pass, choose a morning before 10 AM, when the fog has cleared but the sun isn't too harsh, for the clearest photos from the summit.
