Quang Binh sits at the narrowest stretch of central Vietnam, which means there are plenty of ways in: plane, train, long-distance coach and now a dedicated tourist train linking it with the former imperial capital of Hue. The only question is which option fits your starting point, your schedule and your budget. This article compares them all, including the final leg from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha.
First: what is Quang Binh called administratively now?
After the administrative reorganisation, Quang Binh was merged with Quang Tri into Quang Tri province, with the administrative centre in Dong Hoi. When searching for flights or train tickets you still look for Dong Hoi (airport code VDH, Dong Hoi railway station) – nothing has changed in booking systems. Only official paperwork uses the current province name.
1. By air – the fastest option
Dong Hoi Airport (VDH) lies about 6 km from the city centre and is the main gateway for Quang Binh tourism. The core domestic routes are Hanoi – Dong Hoi and Ho Chi Minh City – Dong Hoi, with flight times from roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to just under 2 hours.
From 16 August 2026 the airport also has a direct Dong Hoi – Cam Ranh service, connecting Quang Binh with Nha Trang without transiting through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City – details in our article on the new Dong Hoi – Cam Ranh route.
Pros: maximum time saved, ideal for a 2–3 day trip. Cons: fares swing sharply by season, and frequencies are thinner than at major airports, so a cancellation can mean a long wait for the next departure.
2. By train – cheap, reliable, scenic
Dong Hoi station sits on the North – South railway line with daily services in both directions. Many travellers prefer it because an overnight journey saves a hotel night, and the coastal stretch of central Vietnam is famously beautiful from the tracks.
From 28 August 2026 there is also a dedicated tourist train, Hue – Phong Nha, running as a day service in both directions and stopping at Hue, Dong Ha, My Trach, Dong Hoi and Tho Loc. Pros: affordable, no traffic jams, sleeper berths for long legs. Cons: total travel time is several times longer than flying – roughly 9–11 hours from Hanoi depending on the service.
3. Coach and limousine – flexible pick-up
For travellers coming from neighbouring provinces, the road is usually the most sensible option:
- Hue → Dong Hoi: about 160 km, roughly 3.5–4 hours by car.
- Da Nang → Dong Hoi: about 260 km, roughly 5–6 hours.
- Vinh → Dong Hoi: about 200 km, roughly 4 hours.
- Hanoi → Dong Hoi: about 490 km; overnight sleeper coaches take 9–10 hours.
The big advantage of road travel is flexible pick-up and drop-off: many operators collect you at your hotel and can drop you directly in the Phong Nha area rather than at Dong Hoi bus station. The downside is dependence on weather and road conditions, particularly in storm season.
4. Self-driving – for the independent
National Highway 1A runs the length of the province, while the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road passes through the Phong Nha area with superb mountain scenery. If you drive yourself, allow extra time for stops and note that the section through the national park is very quiet at night, with few service stations.
Getting from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha
This is the leg most people forget to plan. The Phong Nha tourist area is about 45–50 km from central Dong Hoi, roughly one hour by car. You have three choices:
- A tour with door-to-door transport – the easiest, since the price covers transfers, tickets and a guide. For example the Phong Nha – Paradise Cave day tour.
- A private car by the day – sensible for groups of four or more, or families with older members.
- Motorbike – cheap and free-spirited, but nearly 50 km each way under the central Vietnamese sun is harder than it sounds.
Which option should you pick?
- 2–3 days, departing from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City → fly into Dong Hoi and spend all your time on the caves.
- Coming from Hue or Da Nang → car or train; the Hue – Phong Nha tourist train in particular turns the transfer into part of the trip.
- Tight budget, happy to travel overnight → sleeper train or sleeper coach, then check in and start touring the next morning.
- Coming from Nha Trang → use the direct Cam Ranh – Dong Hoi flight and skip the connection.
A few notes to keep your trip intact
- Storm season, September to November: roads can flood locally and flights are more easily disrupted. Keep a spare day if your itinerary crosses provinces.
- Early flights: Dong Hoi Airport is small and formalities are quick, but transport at dawn is limited – book a car in advance.
- Departure day: do not schedule a cave tour on the morning of a midday flight. The drive from Phong Nha to the airport takes about an hour before any delays.
- Luggage: if you buy fish sauce, shrimp paste or dried seafood as gifts, wrap them well and check them in.
