Kampot was once the main port of Cambodia. Today, this provincial town retains its row of pale yellow-walled French shophouses along the riverbank, its slow pace of life, and Kampot pepper, renowned among chefs worldwide.
Just half an hour away by car is Kep – a small fishing village on the Gulf of Thailand, home to a famous crab market: crabs are kept in baskets submerged right in the water, and guests choose and pick whichever crab they want, stir-fried with Kampot green pepper harvested that very day.
This 2-day itinerary departs from Phnom Penh, making it ideal to combine with a longer Cambodia tour or to take as a standalone weekend getaway.
Highlights
Kampot Pepper Farm – This geographically indicated pepper is highly sought after by European chefs; take a tour and taste it right in the garden.
Kep Crab Market – Pick live crabs straight from the water baskets, stir-fried with green pepper harvested the very same day.
Kampot French Quarter – A row of colonial buildings with yellow walls along the river, their architecture almost perfectly preserved.
Phnom Chhngok Cave – A 7th-century Khmer temple nestled deep within a limestone cave.
