In 1995, UNESCO recognized Luang Prabang as a World Heritage Site, and this ancient Lao capital has remained virtually unchanged ever since: over 30 temples with curved roofs, rows of French-era wooden houses, and every early morning, a procession of monks on alms rounds walking silently along the streets.
Four days here should not be rushed. The itinerary dedicates the mornings to the Tak Bat alms-giving ceremony and Xieng Thong Pagoda, and the afternoons to the emerald-green Kuang Si Falls and Pak Ou Caves, which house over 4,000 Buddha statues in the caves along the Mekong River.
On one evening, guests will attend the Baci wrist-tying ceremony and enjoy a meal at a local Lao home – a traditional blessing ritual that the Lao people perform for honored guests.
Highlights
Tak Bat alms-giving ceremony – Hundreds of orange-robed monks go on alms rounds at dawn along the ancient streets.
Kuang Si Waterfall – A three-tiered waterfall with turquoise pools, featuring an adjacent Asiatic black bear rescue center.
Pak Ou Caves – Limestone caves along the Mekong River housing over 4,000 Buddha statues offered by locals over many centuries.
Baci ceremony – A wrist-tying blessing ritual, accompanied by a dinner at a local Lao home.
